2010-11 TOMO HYDROFOIL

After almost 5 years of refining the classic ‘Steve Lis fish design’, Daniel Thomson has developed a unique design break through. Evolving the fundamental characteristics of the fish into a new design category. The ‘Hydrofoil’ design was named because at it could not be categorised as a twin-fin nor fish, but rather a modern, ‘hydrodynamic-foil engineered planning hull’ or in short “Hydrofoil".

“ I have incorporated the theories of hydrodynamic planning hulls developed by early 20th century Naval Hydro-physicist Lindsay Lord. Lord’s planning hull theories in the 1946 literature “Architecture of Planning Hulls” were explored with great success by Guru surfboard designer Bob Simmons in the late 1940’s and early 50’s with the now legendary dual fin planning hull surfboard.

Based on Bernoulli principle of “dynamic lift” the Lord derivative Bernoulli formula of ( L=CL P/2 SV2) explores hydrolic force interacting with a foil engineered object. Bernoulli’s equation states: “ Where area of an object is decreasing = the (V) Velocity of the fluid increases. Due to Increasing velocity of the fluid = (P) Pressure of the fluid decreases, therefore creating (L) Lift “

Considering these formulas When i engineer my surfboards, i incorporate a parallel outline with a gradual area decrease, falling from a well forward wide point, creating a noticeable increase in speed, lift and hydro-planning sensation “.

RAPTOR

I’ve found that the best way to release the high velocity laminar flow created by the foil outline is a combination of sharp calculated angles, rather than the of curves of a fish tail.

Consequently the Raptor tails release the low pressure flow cleanly which gives the designs a free and effortless manoeuvrability and minimal resistance hydroplaning. The Raptor Hydrofoil is an exciting and truely unique future performance surfing experience.

The Raptor range includes the V1, V2 and the V1 Afterburner.

V1

V2

The V2 model incorporates the same design fundamentals as The V1 with a slightly different release angles cutting back from both sides of the of each tails, creating what looks like a double-diamond fish tail.

V1 AFTERBURNER

Using the same outline as the V1 i have modified the rocker and bottom contours of the V1 afterburner to complement a unique quad-channel cut through a deep Vee-double concave.

This provides the design a heightened degree of stability, directional control and hold in powerful conditions. Needless to say this model is F@#k’in Fast and extremely high performance.

V1 SUBSONIC

This board is a simple redirection of laminar flow by shortening of the rail line of the F-16 Afterburner.

Surgical control, radical top end speed potential whilst an increase in ratio of {Speed Increase : Control} which feels perfectly balanced . Designed purely for rewriting your performance potential in “Real Power Conditions” .

F16 AFTERBURNER

(Channel Bottom) The power wave performer of the Hydrofoil range is a unique 6- channel dual fin engineered to give the Hydrofoil design precise directional control and superior hold even in large powerful conditions, however surprisingly versatile in small wave performance surfing.

The jet tail releases the central channel cleanly and other channels exit the water to the Jet pins and Flyer release points. The F-16 is a solid controlled performer suitable for intermediate to professional surfers.

HYDROFISH

Performs with amazing sustained speed and seemingly resistance free due to the freely releasing Jet-tail. Designed for small conditions and is very user- friendly the FA-18 will allow the rider to glide effortlessly across powerless waves and perform radical high speed manoeuvres even in the most undesirable conditions.

HYDROFOIL THRUSTERS

This range was created when I began redesigning Hydrofoil outlines to adhere more to Planing hull formula Tail Pods.

Wider tail block allows you to flow through mushy sections and free releasing angular tails allow for acute attack, the straight outline with lengthened hard edge holds solidly through power turns.

Excellent aerial release and pop. The HTT’S were created in the Transitional stage of my designing between hydrofoil and MPH. in Early 2009.

DIAMOND

This model was deigned in 2009 for contest campaign in Japan. Basicly I want to see how the hydrofoil hull performed as a thruster for a more pocket orientated contest attack.

The diamond model is a Straight v1 raptor hull with the split tail closed to form the full diamond and a rear fin put in its place. The result is a fast, free flowing board with the on point back foot pivot synonymous with modern thrusters. (Pointed nose Thruster).
